Thacien Uwagirinshuti is a teacher at Sainte Famille School, a primary and secondary school located in Kigali, Rwanda. He explains how children’s behavior can change thanks to the peace-through-sport sessions of the Peace and Sport Methodology 📲 :

“Through sport, pupils learn how to live together, how to collaborate with each other without any form of discrimination. The pupils who attend our sessions within the #PeacemakersProject learn how to resolve conflicts and how to live in a peaceful way.” 🕊

Since December 2021, the #PeacemakersProject is implemented in 4 schools in Rwanda in partnership with AKWOS - the Organization of Kigali Women in Sports. Meet Clementine Kagarama, teacher and peace animator in Ape Rugunga School, in Kigali 👇

"Sport brings people together. When my students are doing sports together, I can transmit the message of peace 🕊

Since the beginning of the Peacemakers Project in Ape Rugunga School, children have learned more about the link between peace and sport.

They have realized that they can contribute to building peace everywhere; when they are at school, in the bus while going home, and even in their house."

We are very pleased to inform you that Mr. Jean-Jérôme Perrin-Mortier has been appointed CEO of Peace and Sport 👏

He will actively support President and Founder of Peace and Sport Joël Bouzou in developing the peace-through-sport movement and implementing Peace and Sport’s strategy.

Jean-Jérôme Perrin-Mortier is succeeding to Laurent Dupont, who is joining an international group based in Paris after eight years at Peace and Sport as CEO.

With an extensive elite sports coaching background, Jean-Jérôme Perrin-Mortier has been involved in sports development as well as in development through sports, collaborating with international federations, NGOs and local authorities in Africa and Asia since the mid-2000s.

Jean-Jérôme Perrin-Mortier coached South Africa, Togo, and Azerbaijan’s Canoeing Kayaking teams in the Olympic Games in 2008, 2012, and 2016. Notably, his achievements in high performance include heading the training team of the World No. 1 Peschier Brothers from France, and the first Olympic medalist in the history of Togo, Benjamin Boukpeti.

Before assuming the CEO position, he has served about four years as Director of the Field Programs and COO at Peace and Sport.

"Transmettre des valeurs à travers le sport est essentiel dans la mesure où le sport est un facteur de réconciliation entre les communautés. C'est la raison pour laquelle le sport est si important pour notre pays, le Burundi.

Je suis passionnée de sport, et en particulier de handball, depuis l'école secondaire. Je joue dans un club qui s'appelle Rumuri. Mon rêve est de pouvoir entraîner des équipes féminines, tous niveaux confondus, et de continuer à sensibiliser les jeunes filles et les femmes à la pratique sportive." 🥰

Sylvère Nsengiyumva est coordinateur du #PeacemakersProject au Centre de Jeunes de Kamenge, au Burundi. Ancien athlète, il est Directeur technique de la Fédération d’athlétisme du #Burundi depuis 2015 👇

« Ce que j'apprécie dans mon métier est, qu'au-delà des médailles et des podiums, les enfants apprennent à se respecter, à se connaître et retrouvent de la joie en jouant. C'est une autre école. 🤸‍♀️

Du temps de l'école secondaire, j'étais passionné par le #football. Malheureusement, les enfants plus âgés nous chassaient du terrain et j'ai été forcé d'abandonner. Actuellement, quand je vois les enfants jouer ensemble, je m'en réjouis. C'est comme si je retrouvais quelque chose que j’ai perdu.

Mon pays a été ravagé par des guerres ethniques et des divisions se sont installées dans les cœurs. Je suis persuadé qu'inculquer les #valeurs du sport, en particulier aux enfants, contribue à trouver un terrain d'entente et à rapprocher les communautés.

A mon sens, il faudrait davantage de volonté politique pour encourager les anciens sportifs, les entraîneurs et autres professionnels du sport à œuvrer à la promotion de la #paix par le sport. Il faudrait que les parents et les écoles comprennent que la pratique sportive et l'enseignement des valeurs du sport sont une nécessité absolue pour les enfants et non une perte de temps. » 🤩

La Championne de la Paix Marlene Harnois a participé hier à un atelier EAC Olympisme mené auprès de la jeunesse de la ville de Beausoleil, dans le cadre du Label « Terres des Jeux » de Paris 2024.

A travers cet atelier, les élèves ont enrichi leurs connaissances sur l’olympisme. Ils se sont appropriés, par des temps sportifs et ludiques, des techniques et des savoirs liés à la culture et à la pratique du sport 😍

Cristian Saénz is one of the peace animators of the #PeacemakersProject in Colombia, alongside the NGO Cop Colombia International. Cristian has been playing football for as long as he can remember, and his passion for football goes above all else ⚽️

“I consider sport as a great tool to break down social barriers and paradigms. My passion for soccer comes from my father and my grandfather, and I always found myself playing football in the parks, with sun, with rain, even in the mud. Over the years, my passion for football has kept growing. 🥰

We need to believe in ourselves to achieve our dreams, and this is something that I want to teach to children. When I was younger, I wanted to become a professional soccer player. Today, my dream is to continue working as a sport trainer, and to help children to achieve their dreams through sport.

Usme, my hometown, needs more sports facilities. For all sports, and not only for soccer. Over the last few years, Colombian institutions have made efforts to provide more sports trainings in all sports disciplines. I believe that it is a good way to help build a better future for our country.”

In a difficult year, the peace animators of the #PeacemakersProject offered strength, inspiration and hope to the children. In 2022, they will keep playing a key role in providing feedback and information to assess the #impact of the field programs ✅

Julieth Alejandra Fuquene Alarcón, peace animator of the Peacemakers Project alongside Cop Colombia International, shared with us her passion for #sports and how she wants to support #children in her #community.

“I practice #taekwondo since the age of 10 and I started to practice football at 16 years old. In my free time, I like to practice other sports such as tennis, volleyball, basketball, and sometimes archery.

My #dream is to promote taekwondo’s practice by creating a taekwondo club in Usme and collaborating with educational institutions. I would like to demonstrate that taekwondo is not only a discipline for boys. Girls have the same abilities than boys and they can reach excellence.

In the #future, I would like to keep teaching #football to kids. Working with children inspires me. With them, I feel that I am growing and learning new things every day.”
