Created in 2008, the annual Peace and Sport Awards reward organizations and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to peace, dialogue and social change in the world through sport. Throughout the years, the Peace and Sport Awards have become a real reference in the peace-through-sport movement: the winners of this prestigious prize are a source of inspiration for other stakeholders on how to use sport as tool for social development and peace.
In regular times, sport provides a platform for people to come together physically. This year, an unprecedented global health crisis prevented people from around the world to come together, and put a stop to many sport events. At the same time, the Covid-19 pandemic also pushed many organizations and individuals to adapt and rely on new technologies to continue peace through sport activities, spreading the positive values of sport.
The Peace and Sport Awards recognize and honour organizations and individuals for their devotion to use sport for the benefit of their communities. Under the current circumstances, it is of the uttermost importance to recognise and reward their work, encouraging others to follow their example.
Due to the international sanitary context, the peace and sport family won’t be able to gather for a new edition of the Peace and Sport International Forum in 2020. Nevertheless, a digital Peace and Sport Awards ceremony will be held on 15th December. This prestigious online event will showcase the best peace through sport initiatives from around the world, and virtually connect all actors using sport as tool for social development and peace.
For the 2020 digital edition of the Peace and Sport Awards, five prizes will be granted to exceptional and innovative initiatives promoting peace through sport under the following categories:
- April6 initiative of the year
- Innovative action of the year
- Sport for development and peace program of the year
- Champion of the year
- Special Jury prize
Champions for Peace and the Jury will respectively be in charge of selecting the winners of the “Champion of the Year” and “Special Jury Prize” Awards. The “April 6 Initiative of the year” will be open for vote on social media.
The applications for the 2020 Peace and Sport Awards are now open until 25th October.
