Peace and Sport Awards 2011

thumb_trophy_award2010Launched in 2008, the Peace and Sport Awards have become one of the highlights of the Peace and Sport International Forum.

They reward sport initiatives and individuals who contribute to peace and social stability in the world, in areas that have been made vulnerable due to poverty, the aftermath of conflict or lack of social cohesion.

They reward the expertise of many different kinds of actors for sustainable peace through sport.

These initiatives help to highlight best practices and enhance experiences in the field to inspire others.

The Peace and Sport Awards Ceremony will this year take place on Thursday, 27th October, during the Gala Dinner of the Peace and Sport International Forum 2011.

Awards will be presented to seven categories of projects:

  • Best Project for Peace from an International Sports Federation

This award recognizes excellence from an International Federation which has put its sport at the service of social action, whilst also contributing to the national development of the sport.

  • Sports Event for Peace of the Year

This prize is awarded to an event demonstrating its ability to effectively promote a message of peace through sport, which also contributes to implement sustainable peace within the communities involved.

  • Non-Governmental Organization for Peace of the Year

This prize is awarded to an NGO which has demonstrated real expertise in using sport as a tool for peace education and has delivered an impact on the people with whom it works.

  • Best Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the Year

This category was created to reward an international corporation which has particularly shown its citizenship by using sport as a tool for peace education.

  • Peace and Sport Image of the Year

The Image of the Year Award is announced at the Georges Bertellotti Golden Podium Awards of SPORTELMonaco, the benchmark event for sports content in Television and New Media, which is held prior to the International Forum. However the award is presented to the winner during the Peace and Sport Awards Ceremony.

  • Special Jury Prize

This award pays tribute to creative initiatives (such as films, books, exhibitions, art etc.) which have highlighted the positive role that sport can play for sustainable peace.

  • NEW in 2011: Champion for Peace of the Year

This award is presented to the international athlete who has made the greatest contribution throughout the year to promoting and using sport for the cause of sustainable peace.

Voting Process

The Jury for the Peace and Sport Awards 2011 will consist of eminent personalities invested at the highest level in activities to promote or to consolidate peace through sport. They will be given the responsibility to select the winner of five of the seven Peace and Sport Awards 2011.

The two remaining Peace and Sport Awards will have an alternative process of voting:

- Peace and Sport Image of the Year to be decided by the online public via the Peace and Sport website

- Champion for Peace of the Year to be selected by the members of the Champions for Peace Club. This award is open to all international athletes who work towards peace through sport.
