Biography / Awards

Zakia is an Afghan para-athlete. In 2016, the para-taekwondoist won the African championship in Egypt, making her one of the first women from her country to practice her sport at international level.  In 2021, she was forced to leave her country to continue practicing her sport, as the current regime made it unsafe to do so. She then joined the Paralympic refugee team and, in 2024, became the first athlete from the Paralympic refugee team to win a medal.
