Dear members of the Peace and Sport family and friends,

We will have the great pleasure of welcoming you to the Principality of Monaco for the 5th edition of the Peace and Sport International Forum from the 26th to 28th October 2011.

This will be a milestone event, marking half a decade of collective effort to increase sport’s contribution to peace‐building and peace‐promotion throughout the world.

We should together consider what remains to be done to make sport a decisive tool in consolidating the peace process across the globe. This ambition is core to the evolution of the Peace and Sport International Forum that we are delighted to tell you about in this newsletter.

The debates that take place during the Forum will influence international current events. An entire session will be dedicated to sports diplomacy in the XXI century so that together we can consider how sport can associate with bilateral or multilateral political efforts.

We will give the floor to people who are driving forces in many peace through sport projects whose opinions are often unsolicited. I am referring to the great sporting champions! They will share THEIR vision for peace through sport. We are expecting to have an exceptional line‐up of speakers for this unique session!

This Forum is the manifestation of a global network of committed actors, mobilized all year round. We invite you to join the discussion groups soon available on our online community through our website. Please express your opinions, offer ideas and share your knowledge… The outcomes of these online debates will lay the foundations for workshops during the Forum designed to bring concrete solutions to your needs.

All of these developments will support the three ingredients that make the Peace and Sport
International Forum such a unique event:

‐ The participation of new stakeholders and opinion‐leaders (sometimes unexpected!) showing
that peace through sport is a major concern for everyone,
‐ Open and frank dialogue,
‐ The diversity of members of our platform who strengthen Peace and Sport’s efficiency.
The Peace and Sport team sincerely hopes to welcome you to Monaco on October 26th to 28th.

Please feel free to contact us to share your comments and suggestions in order to ensure that the 5th International Forum is a decisive step for peace!

Happy reading!

topProvisional Program for the 5th edition of the Peace and Sport International Forum

Programme

An innovative program has been devised for the events which will take place during the 5th Peace and Sport International Forum, which is envisaged to build further cooperation between actors in the field and assist practitioners in overcoming challenges faced during their activities.

This program will include 3 rewarding workshops, 5 insightful plenary sessions and an advantageous networking session. These events are anticipated to facilitate more interactive discussions during the International Forum with the aim of achieving the most concrete outcomes so they can be easily transferred into practice within the field of sport as a tool for peace.
The new format of the 2011 edition will help meet the following expectations, focusing on training local operators, increasing high-level exchanges between political decision-makers and encouraging interaction among delegates. To achieve these objectives, three novel approaches are proposed:

Three workshops will be held on the opening day to allow stakeholders to present their challenges faced in the field. Experts will be on hand to intervene and offer solutions to the problems faced by the participants in an attempt to reach agreement on these issues.

The relevant workshop themes are as follows:

  • Workshop A: Sport as an effective tool in overcoming trauma following natural disasters
  • Workshop B: How can collaboration between the various levels of sporting agencies become a reality in the field?
  • Workshop C: How can disability sport contribute to the peace-building process?
Five plenary sessions dedicated to the exchange of experience between high-level panelists and their confrontation of views with the audience. These interactive sessions will help identify ways of cooperation between the various stakeholders in attendance in order to optimize the coordination of activities in progress and those that have yet to come.

The intriguing plenary session themes are as follows:

  • Plenary Session 1: How do Governments rely on sport as a tool for diplomacy?
  • Plenary Session 2: To what degree does Champions’ involvement in the promotion of peace through sport extend to?
  • Plenary Session 3: How can sport play a role in reducing the negative consequences of a growing urban population?
  • Plenary Session 4: How can the media become stimulated to advocate the case for peace through sport?
  • Plenary Session 5: Preparing the Future for Youth and the Youth for the Future
A valuable Networking Session to encourage direct interaction between delegates. This feature is intended to capitalize on the diversity of delegates who participate in the Forum.
