EDITORIAL BY JOEL BOUZOU

First of all, I have great pride in addressing you after the extraordinary mobilization that you achieved on 6 April, responding to our appeal for the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, and confirming to what extent the peace through sport movement is growing in strength and influence.

Aside from the numerous sports initiatives that took place on this occasion, the essence of the day lies at the heart of the social objectives they targeted. The same applies to another major event that is the current focus of media and world attention: the Football World Cup that has just kicked off in Brazil.

As our Champion for Peace Venuste Niyongabo demonstrated, sport - a truly universal language - rebuilds links between divided communities. It can also help countries in the midst of great transformations, like Brazil, to promote social cohesion through its intrinsic unifying qualities.

The organization of such an important event implies great responsibility. And the legacy program plays a major role in mobilizing this responsibility which, above and beyond the performances on the pitch, will make the event a real success. The World Cup represents an evolutionary phase in the host country, a step towards more sustainable social stability which can only truly take shape in the long term. Let us hope that it is this legacy which transcends the event itself, in the same way as the Rugby World Cup and the Olympic Games.

In this, sport constitutes a real investment for peace, not an expense.

And footballers themselves are proof of this same commitment and vision: on 11 May, the French National Union of Professional Football created a ‘Peace and Sport Trophy’ which will be awarded every year to a French footballer involved in an international charity or association, which perfectly illustrates this movement.

Peace and Sport Champions for Peace Christian Karembeu and Elias Figueroa, as well as Pedrag Pašić, are iconic players who put their image and popularity at the service of peace and dialogue through various initiatives that Peace and Sport encourages and supports.

In order to keep reiterating this message, the Peace and Sport team has evolved. With confidence and determination, I’m pleased to present its new structure to you, made up of enthusiastic actors for peace through sport.

Together, we continue to spread the message: sport is a vehicle for peace and a means to bring populations together. It plays a decisive role at the heart of society, as the examples which follow in this newsletter demonstrate.

Happy reading!

Present on the ground since 2007 in post-conflict countries and areas suffering from extreme poverty or a lack of social cohesion, Peace and Sport has demonstrated how sport and its unifying, educational and civic values can enhance dialogue, build solidarity and encourage social cohesion within and among different communities. By leading field programs in a number of different regions worldwide, we have developed and honed our expertise, enabling us to provide year-round support to a range of stakeholders in the design, development and implementation of peace through sport projects. Our ultimate goal in backing these actions is to ensure their impact and long-term efficacy.

To do so, we always prioritize capacity building on the ground, and the exchange of experiences, over the proliferation and reach of our operations. In practice, these take the form of capacity-building workshops, the development of dynamic and adaptable tools (such as the Adapted Sport Manual) and close monitoring and on-going evaluation to help local actors use sport more effectively and tailor it to their projects, but also to become self-sufficient in the management of their operations.

Of course, a helping hand only goes so far, and these pilot programs must be innovative and sensitive to the environmental, economic and cultural realities on the ground. And at such an investment there comes a cost. This cost does not come from ad hoc humanitarian aid but from developing sustainable and self-sufficient projects.

To help fund these programs, Peace and Sport is working to develop more and more partnerships for sporting events (New York Marathon, Nice-Cannes Marathon, triathlons, etc.) and other charity events (auctions and gala evenings, among others). The money raised is donated in its entirety to our field projects.

By taking part in these events,
you can all become actors for peace through sport!

Your participation will help us to increase the impact and sustainability of our actions, through:
- The training of local actors
- The development of initiatives
- The holding of symbolic events aimed at unifying and reconciling people through sport.

Launch of the ‘Athletics for Peace’ program in the Great Lakes region

Peace and Sport, the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) and the IAF (International Athletics Foundation) have partnered to launch the program ‘Kids’ Athletics’ over two years. Kicking off with targeted training for staff within youth centres, the program will enable the implementation of various adapted sport activities for young Burundians, Congolese and Rwandans.

A similar program launched in Colombia in December 2013, which focuses on using athletics to create synergies between the peace movement and the Colombian sports movement, has proven a great success.

Our partners are opening new centres

Thanks to on-going support from Peace and Sport, its partner federations and FIFPro (International Federation of Professional Footballers), ACF (Action for Change Foundation) is currently developing the ‘Sport for Peace’ program, which features football, table tennis, badminton and athletics.

We are very proud to have supported ACF for over five years and to see it expand through the development of two new centres close to the border with Indonesia (in Gleno and Maliana). These new hubs, opened this year, are giving a further boost to the promotion of peace through sport in the Southeast-Asian region.

A potential new partnership project on home turf

On 17 May, a day of adapted sport and educational activities (rugby, basketball and fencing) was held in Castelnaudary, involving thirty or so at-risk young people from the ANRAS (French national association for research and social action) educational and professional centre in Saint-Papoul, in partnership with the local council and gendarmerie of Castelnaudary. Following the success of this action-packed day, we are exploring the feasibility of developing a pilot project for young people in ANRAS care.

‘Peace and Sport Cup - Women in Badminton’, Dubai 2014

In partnership with the International Badminton Federation and the Dubai Sports Council, Peace and Sport held the ‘Peace and Sport Cup’ from 26 to 30 April in Dubai.

This five-day event saw women from Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Iraq go head-to-head in competitions, while at the same time promoting a message of friendship and peace in the Gulf region and advocating women’s participation in sporting activities.

Some weeks before, our team was invited to explore these social issues at another key event in Dubai, the Corporate Games.

A Peace and Sport Trophy awarded by the UNFP

After presenting Peace and Sport with a trophy to honour its achievements on 11 May, the UNFP (National Union of Professional Footballers) announced the launch of a ‘Peace and Sport Trophy’ that will be awarded each year to a French footballer playing in France or abroad for their humanitarian actions within a foundation or association.

“Football is the world’s most popular sport and footballers have a huge influence on our young people. I think that this special status gives them a role to play in helping damaged communities. By launching this award, we hope to encourage players to further their commitment to youngsters, and in return, to reward and bring to light their actions.” Philippe Piat, FIFPro and UNFP President

Muay Thai for peace

On Saturday 14 June, Monaco played host to the 2nd edition of the Monte Carlo Fighting Masters, an event under the High Patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco. In partnership with Peace and Sport, the Fighting Masters saw 14 Muay Thai champions compete for not less than seven World Championship titles, all in one evening! The event showcased not only the key role that sport plays in education and encouraging dialogue, but also that of the fighters, who took on their opponents with respect.

President and Founder Joël Bouzou is at the forefront of Peace and Sport’s vision; it is he who sets the organization’s objectives with the advice of the Executive Board.

At the heart of this vision are the field programs, some of which you’ve been able to read about above. They are coordinated by Yves and David, who are regularly present on the ground to give direct support to local actors and who also develop adapted tools to support capacity-building activities. Led by Philippe, Director of International Operations, they work together to devise and develop sustainable programs. To ensure the long-term impact of our projects, Sylvain is in charge of developing fundraising activities and partnerships with events worldwide. He draws on the fame and popularity of our Champions for Peace who readily lend their skills and knowledge to the organization, and whose day-to-day actions are coordinated by Mélanie.

Peace and Sport’s actions wouldn’t be complete without Karine, who has a more diplomatic remit. She focuses on developing the relations that the organization establishes with major international players, namely those that attend the Peace and Sport International Forum, our keystone annual event. For the last five years, Ana-Luz has played a pivotal role in developing the Forum and in communicating on all of Peace and Sport’s actions. Lending his invaluable support to the team on a daily basis is Laurent, Brand Development Director, who alongside Philippe runs the day-to-day management of the organization.

Communicating at international level means communicating in English, and that’s where Tess, our translator, comes in. She is regularly supported by Faye, who has recently joined the team as a volunteer but who has worked with Peace and Sport since its infancy.

None of our actions would be possible without Brigitte, who manages the administration of the organization and who also provides assistance to the management and the Executive Board.

By pooling their complementary skills and knowledge, the team has built Peace and Sport’s reputation as a major player in the peace through sport movement.
