We are the champions for peace

a word from joel

Dear Olympians, dear Friends,

Nearly four years ago, in my capacity of Olympian and Board Member of the World Olympians Association, I had the pleasure of introducing Peace and Sport, l’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport to you, an organisation which I had the honour of founding under the High Patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco and I continue to preside over.

At the time I told you about my vision and commitment to promote sport as a tool for peace education and peace-building in vulnerable communities. Today, I am happy to contact you once again to tell you about the involvement and dedication of 55 Champions and Olympians who are part of the ‘Champions for Peace’ club that Peace and Sport created in October 2009.

A great number of you have come forward with concrete initiatives, helping us to promote our message. Whether they are actions in the field or spectacular fund-raising operations, I have been astounded by your desire to contribute to our mission. Thank you for your creativity and generosity!

Our unique status of athletes and Olympians makes us conscious of the power that sport has to act as a dedicated and adapted tool to resolve deep-rooted social problems. A great number of you invest yourselves, either personally or in the context of concerted action. Please contact me if you have any ideas for projects. I am here so that together, we can make them become reality because you are the backbone of the Peace and Sport movement.

This newsletter tells you about some of the actions that you are engaged in and I would like to inform you about some upcoming operations, with the hope that this trip of the horizon will motivate more of you to get involved in the Champions for Peace club.

Peace through sport is the best fight that sport can offer. And we need to win this fight. Together.

Sportingly yours,

Joël BOUZOU

Djokovic

An ace for peace! Our club has a new sport ‘heavyweight’: ATP world number 2 seed NOVAK DJOKOVIC, who joined our ‘Champions for Peace’ club during the recent Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.

Djokovic
His unusual profile and charisma make “Djoko” a perfect champion to spread awareness about this cause to the millions of young tennis fans of throughout the world for whom Novak is an icon.

Enthusiastic and determined, he will involve his fans, reach out to new audiences and convince policy-makers that sport can and must contribute to sustainable peace.
Following his meeting with H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and Joël Bouzou, Novak Djokovic declared: "I am very proud that I was invited to become a Champion for Peace. I want to give back to the world the joy and fulfilment that I have received through tennis. I firmly believe that sport serves the cause of peace by improving the lives of young people and building bridges between communities. I want to contribute and become an actor for peace. The Peace and Sport organisation is the perfect platform to achieve this."

Novak will be on familiar ground in the club because no less than 6 Champions for Peace are tennis players : Ronald Agenor, Rohan Bopanna, Jean-Philippe Fleurian, Tatiana Golovin, Helena Suvoka, and Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi.

Frolla
On Friday, May 27, 2011, at 12:00, as a side event to the F1 Monaco Grand Prix, Pierre Frolla, multi-record-holder in free diving, will make a No-Limit dive to retrieve the official chequered flag of the 69th Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, located at a depth of more than 60m at the bottom of the sea, opposite Monaco’s Oceanographic Museum.

This unique exercise in the style of the film ‘The Big Blue’ has been christened ‘Operation Poseidon 2011’. Pierre himself (who holds 3 world records in free immersion in 1999, 2000 and 2001, and 1 in variable weight in 2004) organized this initiative! This spectacular dive will be made in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and many other famous personalities.

At the end of the dive the flag will be auctioned and the proceeds will go to “Peace and Sport, l’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport”.

The Grand Prix chequered flag  was signed by some of the greatest athletes  in the world during the  Monaco Tennis Open 2011, including Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena,  as well as H.S.H. PRINCE ALBERT II and Pierre Frolla.
On the Thursday before the F1 Monaco Grand Prix, the flag will also be signed by all the racing drivers competing in the race

As every year, Peace and Sport attended the SportAccord Convention, which this year was held in London, to meet International Federations and decision-makers from sport governing bodies.

The 2011 edition had an extra special dimension due to the presence of a new team member, triple World Champion Wilson Kipketer, who spent 3 days on the Peace and Sport stand to speak to delegates about the role of athletes in peace-building missions….and to sign autographs for his numerous fans! Wilson is famous on British soil for beating Seb Coe’s world record!

Wilson was also the compère for a quiz at our cocktail reception. An unforgettable moment for the 200 guests who are members of the Peace and Sport community who tried to win the running shoes that Wilson wore when he won is last world record, which he held for 13 years. The lucky winner was Mike Laflin, Editor of Sportcal Magazine and himself a middle-distance runner.
