PEACE AND SPORT Role

Accompany the local organization in developing their education, insertion and socialization through sports program.

Background

Madagascar is one of the poorest countries on the planet, with remote regions and numerous young people in great difficulty. 47% of the population is under 15 years old.

The island faces enormous challenges with education and training : More or less 1.5 million children in age of going to school are out-of-school, and only 3 out of 10 school children finish primary school. The access to culture and sport, in villages and in poor neighbourhoods of large cities is reduced immensely. The main drawbacks to education are old programmes, poorly trained teachers (2/3 of the primary school teachers haven’t received an official training), the number of school infrastructures and the increase in the cost of education.

This is the case in rural settings of Madagascar, but also in the poor neighbourhoods of large cities, notably Antananarivo, where most of poor villagers come from upcountry. The traditional networks of solidarity tend to disappear in towns and thus, a large chunk of these migrants falls in chronic poverty. Intervene in the capital city with the creation of a pilot place for education and social integration of children through sports gives the opportunity to communicate more directly with the national authorities, showing them the efficiency of this kind of program, which could be, later-on, reproduced at national level.

Our Action

Sport and its values can play a crucial role in the malagasy context. Indeed, sport is very important for the young people of Madagascar since it is one of the main activities that is practiced during their free time. There are many qualities that sport brings, for example: respect, solidarity, mutual assistance, creativity, sportsmanship, self-confidence, perseverance, courage, and loyalty. These are all values common to school and sport. This results in lowering rates of school dropouts and improve school results, and thus gives children stronger bases to build their future. Practice of mixt sport allows also to teach them gender equality and respect.

Expected outcomes

The general objective of “Sport Terre Malgache” is to use the values of sport to contribute to social integration and education of malagasy children, by giving them the opportunity to take initiatives, and cooperate to develop collective and sustainable life projects.

“Sport Terre Malgache” aims to:

Overcome the feeling of abandonment and isolation of malagasy children.
To bring back hope and the desire of success due to the power of sport, team spirit, rigor, and initiative taking.
The practice of sport associated to medical check-ups and school monitoring results in lowering maternity rates among young girls but also in the reduction of maternal and infantile death.
Construction of a medical dispensary in the Sports Centre will allow children, educators, parents and other members of the community to receive medical consultations and medicines.
Promote social integration and education of youth, by using the fundamental values of sports
Train and professionalize malagasy educators so that they are able to teach sport but also to educate young people to live a responsible life.

This partnership means a lot to me and for the numerous volunteers that collaborated with PACHAMAMA since its creation 10 years ago.
