“Sport can offer better than the individual performance, it can help achieve a collective and social target; in a way, I consider it a normal pay back to the community for all the good things sport brought to me. Now, day after day, through Peace and Sport, I feel the strength of sport and how much it can change the mentalities and habits. Contributing to peace is the most beautiful fight sport can offer. And this fight, we need to win it together.”

Peace through Sport: when the myth becomes reality

jb_book

by Joel Bouzou
Preface by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco

THE BOOK

Today, sport has reached a stage of global development that no other human activity can match. Its impact on society, irrespective of age and frontiers, gives it unequalled potential to mobilize. But with this unique power to unite comes a responsibility: to serve peace.

In recent years, there has been a true awakening about the potential of sport to lend support to development policies and peace-keeping processes. Sport is indeed a pragmatic tool because it shapes future generations and facilitates dialogue between nations and communities. Its structuring virtues provide a framework to prevent many hardships that plague populations most exposed to violence, hatred and poverty.

It is time to forge closer links between two worlds that hardly know each other: actors for peace on the one hand and the sports movement’s powerful network on the other. Sport deserves greater consideration and application in crisis management and post-conflict reconstruction. It should also be used more generally to foster the necessary conditions for sustainable peace to emerge.
