Peace and Sport

Dear Team Peace and Sport Runners,
Dear Donators, Followers and Friends of Peace and Sport.

As you know, the 2012 ING New York City Marathon, of which Peace and Sport is a registered charity, had to be cancelled due to hurricane Sandy leaving a wake of destruction in the entire region. The authorities, with a heavy heart, had no other choice but to cancel the Marathon so that resources could be concentrated on recovery efforts.

The news came on Friday, November 2nd at 5pm, only 36 hours before the start of the race. Most of the members of Team Peace and Sport had already arrived in New York at that time and in spite of their disappointment, all of them perfectly understood the situation and the decision of the authorities.

With the same enthusiasm they put into their training, in a show of solidarity representative of the values of sport in general and running in particular, they teamed up with the American Red Cross to deliver food, water and smiles to badly affected local communities in the downtown Manhattan area.

An International Organization like Peace and Sport must react in a pragmatic and positive way to help emergency recovery operations. This is why, as soon as the storm hit the city and it became clear that the damage was considerable, we immediately set up a volunteer program so that our runners could join the global recovery effort and assist people affected by hurricane Sandy. After the marathon was cancelled, our team’s energy and team spirit found a new way of expression through their solidarity and resilience in this spontaneous partnership to assist the American Red Cross”.

Although our contenders could not run the marathon,
your donations amount to more than 40,000 €!

These funds will be used to support our field programs in 2013.
The 5 following projects will benefit from your generosity:

  • Colombia: 1,000 hours of structured and supervised sport for young people at risk, living in the city of Guapi, in collaboration with the NGO FFUNDAMOR.
  • Great Lakes of Africa: The 2013 Great Lakes Friendship Games uniting young people from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Rwanda, in cooperation with UNDP, MONUSCO and National Olympic Committees of the three countries.
  • Cote d’Ivoire: ‘Le Rugby c’est l’école de la vie’ (Rugby is a school for life) aims at socially reintegrating young people through Rugby.
  • Kenya: Construction of a multi-sport facility at the Tegla Loroupe Peace Academy in Kapenguria, in partnership with the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation.
  • Israel/Palestine: The Jerusalem Suburb Communities Center seeks to foster education and social integration for young people, mainly of Arab origin, in areas often considered as lawless.

Thank you all for your support! We’ll make sure it counts!!
