Run the New York Marathon with Team Peace and Sport
Train with Paula Radcliffe, Tegla Loroupe and Wilson Kipketer!
For the first time, Peace and Sport will take part in the ING New York Marathon on 6 November, 2011 as
an official charity.
We have been allocated 20 entries for this prestigious race that we want to offer as a priority to you,
members and friends of the Peace and Sport community.
To apply for an entry, simply go to our website and complete the application form.
In line with the tradition of the Marathon organizers, runners who want to compete in a Peace and
Sport’s running vest will commit to raising funds for our activities. These funds will be entirely
dedicated to implementing peace‐promotion through sport projects in countries where Peace and Sport operates: i.e. the Great Lakes region in Africa, Haiti, Colombia, Israel‐Palestine, East Timor and Cote d’Ivoire.
But that’s not all! To mark the milestone of our first New York marathon and to offer an exceptional
‘package’ to those who support us, we have involved our Champions for Peace.
Three legendary runners are acting as patrons for Team Peace and Sport:
‐ Paula Radcliffe, current Marathon world record‐holder (2h 15min 25sec) and three‐time
winner of the New York Marathon and London Marathon. She will be attending the marathon to
invest all her energy as a coach to the 20 Peace and Sport runners, although she will not compete
this year
‐ Tegla Loroupe, past world record‐holder for 20, 25 and 30 km; triple world champion for halfmarathon
and the first African woman to have won the New York Marathon in 1994 and 1995!
‐ Wilson Kipketer, three‐time 800m world champion between 1995 and 1999. The NY Marathon
will be his first‐ever marathon!
These star athletes will provide intensive training on‐line and offer their own personal advice to give
totally unique technical, physical and mental preparation,
culminating in a 2‐hour group training session in Central Park on the eve of the event.
Inscriptions are open until 30 June!

WHAT THE CHAMPIONS SAY ...
|
|

|
|
Paula Radcliffe: “I am very proud to make a contribution to the cause upheld by Peace and Sport. Since I have
been a mother I am much more aware of the desperate situations that some children in the world live in and
this deeply saddens me. Sport is a simple, easy‐to‐implement way of giving landmarks in life to children who
are left to their own devices and gives them values which can greatly enrich their lives. By supporting Peace
and Sport’s initiative, I hope to encourage raising funds which will be used to give a better life to hundreds of
youngsters.”

|
|
Tegla Loroupe: “The New York marathon is a very special race for me. I owe it my best memories of being an
athlete. What a pride and pleasure it will be to participate this year, whilst serving peace – a cause that I have
passionately defended for many years! I can’t wait to share my training secrets with the 20 people running in
Peace and Sport colours. I think it’ll be great fun and highly rewarding because these people have committed
to the organization, so it shows they have generous souls!”

|
Wilson Kipketer: “It will be my first marathon and I’m very excited at the prospect. First and foremost it will
give me the opportunity to compete in the world’s most prestigious marathon. Then, Paula and Tegla will
help me in my training: two tremendous athletes that I really admire. Finally, I’ll be running for Peace and
Sport, an organization in which I’ve been involved since it was founded in 2007. It will be a great personal
adventure which I hope will enable me to bring a smile to the faces of children who live in awful poverty. This
is my main motivation and I’m ready to invest all my energy in this project!”

JOEL BOUZOU, PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER OF PEACE AND SPORT:
|
|
Why does Peace and Sport want to be on the starting line of the New York Marathon?
|

|
|
JB: “The New York Marathon is an exceptional race from every aspect! In terms of prestige, of media
coverage, and of the number of participants, it’s the event which all running enthusiasts dream of competing
in one day. For Peace and Sport, being officially linked to this race is clearly a great privilege. And from a
personal point of view, I must say that I like the philosophy of the event where each participant can choose to
run for a humanitarian cause of their choice, by being sponsored or through fund raising. In 2010 Marathon
runners raised a total of 30 million dollars for charity! It’s an excellent example of a sports event which brings
positive and tangible benefits to the lives of people in need.” |
What will Peace and Sport do with the money raised by the 20 runners who will run with Team Pace and
Sport?
JB: “I want all funds collected by Team Peace and Sport to go to developing our field projects. We will suggest
that the 20 competitors choose a project that they would particularly like to support from our ‘catalogue’ of
peace‐building and peace‐promotion projects. Each runner will know exactly which communities will benefit
from the programme, what kind of activities will be offered and how much money is necessary to implement
them. This type of support will make them really involved in the mission. It may even give them that extra
push to beat their own personal bests when they arrive at the finish line in Central Park!”
Why did you ask Paula Radcliffe, Tegla Loroupe and Wilson Kipketer to be mentors for this race?
JB: “These three Champions for Peace are giving us a tremendous gift! What amateur runner wouldn’t dream
of training with Tegla, Paula and Wilson? They agreed to dedicate some of their time, their energy and their
immense talent to this Peace and Sport project with a great deal of goodwill and enthusiasm. And their
presence gives inestimable added value to the ‘package’ that we are offering with the entries. The New York
Marathon is a perfect illustration of what sports champions can do to support a cause. It’s a tangible initiative
that is relatively easy to set up, but one which makes a huge difference to us and to the young people who we
help by bringing stability in their lives through sport. Peace and Sport will increase this type of initiative in the
future because the breadth of needs remains vast. And each time, we will try to involve our Champions for
Peace, who are the backbone of our action.”
