Nearly 500 000 children and adolescents from 8 to 20 years now live in temporary survivor camps in Haiti.
Often left to their own devices, they have lost family, friends, homes and familiar landmarks in the tragedy that hit the island on 12 January.
In this particularly psychologically destabilizing context, sport is one of the main ways of helping these youngsters to overcome their trauma, to resume living together in confidence and to rebuild the country on sustainable, peaceful and fair foundations.
Whilst being a recreational activity, sport can also help to build self-confidence and consequently increase the feeling of psychosocial well-being.
In this sense, sport builds resilience, self-esteem and the desire to develop social ties.
